Privacy Policy

AO3 Fic Recommender — Last updated June 2026

AO3 Fic Recommender ("the Service") is a web app and browser extension that generates fanfiction recommendations based on a user's public AO3 bookmarks. This policy explains what data is and isn't collected.

What we do not collect

AO3 usernames you look up are never sent to our servers. They are used only within your browser (extension) or processed ephemerally on our server for the duration of a single request.
We do not log AO3 usernames, IP addresses, browsing history, or recommendation results.
We do not use cookies, analytics scripts, or tracking pixels.
We do not access your AO3 password or session cookie. Cookies are HttpOnly and are attached by your browser automatically to AO3 requests; we never read them.

Data we handle

Pro license key	Sent to `/validate-key` to verify your subscription. Stored locally in `chrome.storage.local` / `browser.storage.local` on your device.	On your device only. Not stored on our servers.
Stripe payment data	Handled entirely by Stripe. We receive only a Stripe customer ID after a successful payment, which is used to generate your license key.	Stripe customer ID is used to derive your key and is not stored in a database.
AO3 page content	Public bookmark and search pages are fetched to compute recommendations. Content is discarded immediately after the response is returned.	No.

Browser extension

The Chrome and Firefox extensions make all AO3 requests directly from your browser. The only network call to our servers is the license key verification request (ao3reco.fly.dev/validate-key), which sends your license key and nothing else.

Web app

When you use the web app at ao3reco.fly.dev, your AO3 username is sent to our server to fetch public bookmark pages via Playwright. The username and results are not stored or logged after your request completes.

Third parties

Stripe — processes subscription payments. See Stripe's privacy policy.
Fly.io — hosts the web app. Standard server access logs (if any) are governed by Fly.io's privacy policy.

Data retention

We do not maintain a user database. No personal data is retained on our servers beyond the duration of a single request.
